About Carlene

Carlene is the author of two best-selling nonfiction books, including The Undying West, a Chronicle of Montana’s Camas Prairie, and the award-winning Fleeing Fundamentalism: A Minister’s Wife Examines Faith, hailed as “A brave memoir in surprisingly jaunty prose, eloquent without self-pity. A long, fraught journey into the light, chronicled with compassion and spirit.”

Fleeing Fundamentalism received a starred review and was chosen as a Top Book of the Year by Kirkus review, a Top Book for Fall by the Seattle Pl, and an Arts and Media Award Book by the Dallas Morning News.

The Undying West was chosen as a runner up for the Washington Governor’s Award. Fleeing Fundamentalism was chosen as a Top Book of the Year by Kirkus Review, A Top Book for Fall by the Seattle PI, and an Arts and Media Award Book by the Dallas Morning News.

Carlene has taught creative writing at the University of Washington, where she also earned both her BA and MA in American History. Additionally, Carlene was the Coordinating Producer for the PBS series, Bill Nye the Science Guy. She holds a degree in religious studies from Big Sky College. Currently residing in Palm Springs, California, Carlene hosts Have You Ever Wondered?, a podcast that explores the intersection of science and spirituality.
